  19. .TH dpkg\-split 1 "2011-07-04" "Debian Project" "dpkg utilities"
  20. .SH NAME
  21. dpkg\-split \- Debian package archive split/join tool
  22. .
  23. .SH SYNOPSIS
  24. .B dpkg\-split
  25. .RI [ option "...] " command
  26. .
  27. .SH DESCRIPTION
  28. .B dpkg\-split
  29. splits Debian binary package files into smaller parts and reassembles
  30. them again, to support the storage of large package files on small
  31. media such as floppy disks.
  32. It can be operated manually using the
  33. .BR \-\-split ", " \-\-join " and " \-\-info
  34. options.
  35. It also has an automatic mode, invoked using the
  36. .B \-\-auto
  37. option, where it maintains a queue of parts seen but not yet
  38. reassembled and reassembles a package file when it has seen all of its
  39. parts. The
  40. .BR \-\-listq " and " \-\-discard
  41. options allow the management of the queue.
  42. All splitting, joining and queueing operations produce informative
  43. messages on standard output; these may safely be ignored.
  44. .
  45. .SH COMMANDS
  46. .TP
  47. .BR \-s ", " \-\-split " \fIcomplete-archive\fP [\fIprefix\fP]"
  48. Splits a single Debian binary package into several parts.
  49. The parts are named
  50. .IB prefix . N of M .deb
  51. where
  52. .I N
  53. is the part number, starting at 1, and
  54. .I M
  55. is the total number of parts (both in decimal).
  56. If no
  57. .I prefix
  58. is supplied then the
  59. .I complete-archive
  60. filename is taken, including directory, with any trailing
  61. .B .deb
  62. removed.
  63. .TP
  64. .BR \-j ", " \-\-join " \fIpart\fP..."
  65. Joins the parts of a package file together, reassembling the original
  66. file as it was before it was split.
  67. The part files given as arguments must be all the parts of exactly the
  68. same original binary file. Each part must occur exactly once in the
  69. argument list, though the parts to not need to be listed in order.
  70. The parts must of course all have been generated with the same part
  71. size specified at split time, which means that they must usually have
  72. been generated by the same invocation of
  73. .BR "dpkg\-split \-\-split" .
  74. The parts' filenames are not significant for the reassembly process.
  75. By default the output file is called
  76. .IB package _ version _ arch .deb\fR.
  77. .TP
  78. .BR \-I ", " \-\-info " \fIpart\fP..."
  79. Prints information, in a human-readable format, about the part file(s)
  80. specified. Arguments which are not binary package parts produce a
  81. message saying so instead (but still on standard output).
  82. .TP
  83. .BR \-a ", " "\-\-auto \-o" " \fIcomplete-output part\fP"
  84. Automatically queue parts and reassemble a package if possible.
  85. The
  86. .I part
  87. specified is examined, and compared with other parts of the same
  88. package (if any) in the queue of packages file parts.
  89. If all parts of the package file of which
  90. .I part
  91. is a part are available then the package is reassembled and written to
  92. .I complete-output
  93. (which should not usually already exist, though this is not an
  94. error).
  95. If not then the
  96. .I part
  97. is copied into the queue and
  98. .I complete-output
  99. is not created.
  100. If
  101. .I part
  102. is not a split binary package part then
  103. .B dpkg\-split
  104. will exit with status \fB1\fP; if some other trouble occurs then it will
  105. exit with status \fB2\fP.
  106. The
  107. .BR \-\-output " or " \-o
  108. option must be supplied when using
  109. .BR \-\-auto .
  110. (If this were not mandatory the calling program would not know what
  111. output file to expect.)
  112. .TP
  113. .BR \-l ", " \-\-listq
  114. Lists the contents of the queue of packages to be reassembled.
  115. For each package file of which parts are in the queue the output gives
  116. the name of the package, the parts in the queue, and the total number
  117. of bytes stored in the queue.
  118. .TP
  119. .BR \-d ", " \-\-discard " [\fIpackage\fP...]"
  120. This discards parts from the queue of those waiting for the remaining
  121. parts of their packages.
  122. If no
  123. .I package
  124. is specified then the queue is cleared completely; if any are
  125. specified then only parts of the relevant package(s) are deleted.
  126. .TP
  127. .BR \-? ", " \-\-help
  128. Show the usage message and exit.
  129. .TP
  130. .BR \-\-version
  131. Show the version and exit.
  132. .
  133. .SH OPTIONS
  134. .TP
  135. .BI \-\-depotdir " directory"
  136. Specifies an alternative directory for the queue of parts awaiting
  137. automatic reassembly. The default is
  138. .BR /var/lib/dpkg .
  139. .TP
  140. .BR \-S ", " \-\-partsize " \fIkibibytes\fP"
  141. Specifies the maximum part size when splitting, in kibibytes (1024
  142. bytes). The default is 450 KiB.
  143. .TP
  144. .BR \-o ", " \-\-output " \fIcomplete-output\fP"
  145. Specifies the output file name for a reassembly.
  146. This overrides the default for a manual reassembly
  147. .RB ( \-\-join )
  148. and is mandatory for an automatic queue-or-reassemble
  149. .RB ( \-\-auto ).
  150. .TP
  151. .BR \-Q ", " \-\-npquiet
  152. When doing automatic queue-or-reassembly
  153. .B dpkg\-split
  154. usually prints a message if it is given a
  155. .I part
  156. that is not a binary package part. This option suppresses this
  157. message, to allow programs such as
  158. .B dpkg
  159. to cope with both split and unsplit packages without producing
  160. spurious messages.
  161. .TP
  162. .BR \-\-msdos
  163. Forces the output filenames generated by
  164. .B \-\-split
  165. to be msdos-compatible.
  166. This mangles the prefix - either the default derived from the input
  167. filename or the one supplied as an argument: alphanumerics are
  168. lowercased, plus signs are replaced by
  169. .BR x 's
  170. and all other characters are discarded.
  171. The result is then truncated as much as is necessary, and filenames of
  172. the form
  173. .IB "prefixN" of M .deb
  174. are generated.
  175. .
  176. .SH EXIT STATUS
  177. .TP
  178. .B 0
  179. The requested split, merge, or other command succeeded.
  180. .B \-\-info
  181. commands count as successful even if the files are not binary package
  182. parts.
  183. .TP
  184. .B 1
  185. Only occurs with
  186. .B \-\-auto
  187. and indicates that the
  188. .I part
  189. file was not a binary package part.
  190. .TP
  191. .B 2
  192. Fatal or unrecoverable error due to invalid command-line usage,
  193. a file that looked like a package part file but was corrupted, or
  194. interactions with the system, such as accesses to the database,
  195. memory allocations, etc.
  196. .
  197. .SH FILES
  198. .TP
  199. .I /var/lib/dpkg/parts
  200. The default queue directory for part files awaiting automatic
  201. reassembly.
  202. The filenames used in this directory are in a format internal to
  203. .B dpkg\-split
  204. and are unlikely to be useful to other programs, and in any case the
  205. filename format should not be relied upon.
  206. .
  207. .SH BUGS
  208. Full details of the packages in the queue are impossible to get
  209. without digging into the queue directory yourself.
  210. There is no easy way to test whether a file that may be a binary
  211. package part is one.
