  217. =head1 NAME
  218. dpkg-architecture - set and determine the architecture for package building
  219. =head1 SYNOPSIS
  220. dpkg-architecture [options] [action]
  221. Valid options:
  222. B<-a>Debian-Architecture
  223. B<-t>Gnu-System-Type
  224. B<-f>
  225. Valid actions:
  226. B<-l>, B<-q>Variable-Name, B<-s>, B<-u>, B<-c> Command
  227. =head1 DESCRIPTION
  228. dpkg-architecture does provide a facility to determine and set the build and
  229. host architecture for package building.
  230. =head1 OVERVIEW
  231. The build architecture is always determined by an external call to dpkg, and
  232. can not be set at the command line.
  233. You can specify the host architecture by providing one or both of the options B<-a>
  234. and B<-t>. The default is determined by an external call to gcc, or the same as
  235. the build architecture if CC or gcc are both not available. One out of B<-a> and B<-t>
  236. is sufficient, the value of the other will be set to a usable default.
  237. Indeed, it is often better to only specify one, because dpkg-architecture
  238. will warn you if your choice doesn't match the default.
  239. The default action is B<-l>, which prints the environment variales, one each line,
  240. in the format VARIABLE=value. If you are only interested in the value of a
  241. single variable, you can use B<-q>. If you specify B<-s>, it will output an export
  242. command. This can be used to set the environment variables using eval. B<-u>
  243. does return a similar command to unset all variables. B<-c> does execute a
  244. command in an environment which has all variables set to the determined
  245. value.
  246. Existing environment variables with the same name as used by the scripts are
  247. not overwritten, except if the B<-f> force flag is present. This allows the user
  248. to override a value even when the call to dpkg-architecture is buried in
  249. some other script (for example dpkg-buildpackage). The B<-q> query option
  250. implies B<-f>, and is therefore not affected by existing environment settings.
  251. =head1 TERMS
  252. =over 4
  253. =item build machine
  254. The machine the package is build on.
  255. =item host machine
  256. The machine the package is build for.
  257. =item Debian Architecture
  258. The Debian archietcture string, which specifies the binary tree in the FTP
  259. archive. Examples: i386, sparc, hurd-i386.
  260. =item GNU System Type
  261. An architecture specification string consisting of two or three parts,
  262. cpu-system or cpu-vendor-system. Examples: i386-linux, sparc-linux, i386-gnu.
  263. =back
  264. =head1 EXAMPLES
  265. dpkg-buildpackage accepts the B<-a> option and passes it to dpkg-architecture.
  266. Other examples:

  268. eval `dpkg-architecture C<-u>`

  273. The Debian architecture of the build machine.
  274. =item DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE
  275. The GNU system type of the build machine.

  277. The CPU part of DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE
  278. =item DEB_BUILD_GNU_SYSTEM
  279. The System part of DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE
  280. =item DEB_HOST_ARCH
  281. The Debian architecture of the host machine.
  282. =item DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE
  283. The GNU system type of the host machine.
  284. =item DEB_HOST_GNU_CPU
  285. The CPU part of DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE
  286. =item DEB_HOST_GNU_SYSTEM
  287. The System part of DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE
  288. =back
  289. =head1 DEBIAN/RULES
  290. The environment variables set by dpkg-architecture are passed to
  291. debian/rules as make variables (see make documentation). You can and should
  292. use them in the build process as needed. Here are some examples, which also
  293. show how you can improve the cross compilation support in your package:
  294. Instead:
  295. ARCH=`dpkg --print-architecture`
  296. configure $(ARCH)-linux
  297. please use the following:
  298. B_ARCH=$(DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE)
  299. H_ARCH=$(DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE)
  300. configure --build=$(B_ARCH) --host=$(H_ARCH)
  301. Instead:
  302. ARCH=`dpkg --print-architecture`
  303. ifeq ($(ARCH),alpha)
  304. ...
  305. endif
  306. please use:
  307. ARCH=$(DEB_HOST_ARCH)
  308. ifeq ($(ARCH),alpha)
  309. ...
  310. endif
  311. In general, calling dpkg in the rules file to get architecture information
  312. is deprecated (until you want to provide backward compatibility, see below).
  313. Especially the --print-architecture option is unreliable since we have
  314. Debian architectures which don't equal a processor name.
  315. =head1 BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY
  316. When providing a new facility, it is always a good idea to stay compatible with old
  317. versions of the programs. Note that dpkg-architecture does not affect old
  318. debian/rules files, so the only thing to consider is using old building
  319. scripts with new debian/rules files. The following does the job:
  320. DEB_BUILD_ARCH := $(shell dpkg --print-installation-architecture)
  321. DEB_BUILD_GNU_CPU := $(patsubst hurd-%,%,$(DEB_BUILD_ARCH))
  322. ifeq ($(filter-out hurd-%,$(DEB_BUILD_ARCH)),)
  323. DEB_BUILD_GNU_SYSTEM := gnu
  324. else
  325. DEB_BUILD_GNU_SYSTEM := linux
  326. endif
  327. DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE=$(DEB_BUILD_GNU_CPU)-$(DEB_BUILD_GNU_SYSTEM)
  328. DEB_HOST_ARCH=$(DEB_BUILD_ARCH)
  329. DEB_HOST_GNU_CPU=$(DEB_BUILD_GNU_CPU)
  330. DEB_HOST_GNU_SYSTEM=$(DEB_BUILD_GNU_SYSTEM)
  331. DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE=$(DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE)
  332. Put a subset of these lines at the top of your debian/rules file; these
  333. default values will be overwritten if dpkg-architecture is used.
  334. You don't need the full set. Choose a consistent set which contains the
  335. values you use in the rules file. For example, if you only need the host
  336. Debian architecture, `DEB_HOST_ARCH=`dpkg --print-installation-architecture`
  337. is sufficient (this is indeed the Debian architecture of the build machine,
  338. but remember that we are only trying to be backward compatible with native
  339. compilation).
  340. You may not want to care about old build packages (for example, if you have
  341. sufficient source dependencies declared anyway). But you should at least
  342. support the traditional way to build packages by calling `debian/rules
  343. build' directly, without setting environment variables. To do this, use the
  344. B<-q> option to query suitable default values:
  345. DEB_BUILD_ARCH=`dpkg-architecture -qDEB_BUILD_ARCH`
  346. DEB_BUILD_GNU=`dpkg-architecture -qDEB_BUILD_GNU`
  347. etc. You get the idea. This way, you can ensure that the variables are never
