  32. .SH DESCRIPTION
  33. .B dpkg-source
  34. packs and unpacks Debian source archives.
  35. .B dpkg-gencontrol
  36. reads information from an unpacked Debian source tree and generates a
  37. binary package control file on standard output; it also adds an entry
  38. for the binary package to
  39. .BR debian/files .
  40. .B dpkg-shlibdeps
  41. calculates shared library dependencies for executables named in its
  42. arguments. The dependencies are added to the substitution
  43. variables file
  44. .B debian/substvars
  45. as variable names
  46. .BI shlibs: dependencyfield
  47. where
  48. .I dependencyfield
  49. is a dependency field name. Any other variables starting
  50. .I shlibs:
  51. are removed from the file.
  52. .B dpkg-shlibdeps
  53. will read shared library dependency information from
  54. .BR debian/shlibs.local ,
  55. .BR /etc/dpkg/shlibs.override ,
  56. the
  57. .B shlibs
  58. control area file of the package containing the file which
  59. .B ldd
  60. reports as satisfying the library dependency, or
  61. .BR /etc/dpkg/shlibs.default .
  62. The first match will be used. See the
  63. .I Debian packaging manual
  64. for details of the format of shared library dependency files.
  65. .B dpkg-genchanges
  66. reads information from an unpacked and built Debian source tree and
  67. from the files it has generated and generates a Debian upload control
  68. file
  69. .RB ( .changes " file)."
  70. .B dpkg-buildpackage
  71. is a control script which can be used to help automate the building of
  72. a package.
  73. .B dpkg-distaddfile
  74. adds an entry for a named file to
  75. .BR debian/files .
  76. .B dpkg-parsechangelog
  77. reads and parses the changelog of an unpacked Debian source tree and
  78. outputs the information in it to standard output in a machine-readable
  79. form.
  80. None of these commands allow multiple options to be combined into one,
  81. and they do not allow the value for an option to be specified in a
  82. separate argument.
  83. .SH COMMON OPTIONS
  84. Many of these programs share options; these are described here,
  85. together with the programs that accept them.
  86. .TP
  87. .BI -h
  88. Display the particular program's version and usage message, including
  89. a synopsis of the options it understands. This option is understood
  90. by all the source package tools.
  91. .TP
  92. .BI -v version
  93. In
  94. .BR dpkg-buildpackage ", " dpkg-genchanges " and " dpkg-parsechangelog
  95. this causes changelog information from all versions strictly later
  96. than
  97. .I version
  98. (which must appear in the changelog file) to be used.
  99. In
  100. .BR dpkg-gencontrol
  101. it sets the version number of the binary package which will be
  102. generated.
  103. .TP
  104. .BI -C changesdescription
  105. Read the description of the changes from the file
  106. .I changesdescription
  107. rather than using the information from the source tree's changelog
  108. file. This is understood by
  109. .BR dpkg-buildpackage " and " dpkg-genchanges .
  110. .TP
  111. .BI -m maintaineraddress
  112. Use
  113. .I maintaineraddress
  114. as the name and email address of the maintainer for this package,
  115. rather than using the information from the source tree's control.
  116. This is understood by
  117. .BR dpkg-buildpackage " and " dpkg-genchanges .
  118. .TP
  119. .BI -e maintaineraddress
  120. Use
  121. .I maintaineraddress
  122. as the name and email address of the maintainer for this upload,
  123. rather than using the information from the source tree's changelog.
  124. This is understood by
  125. .BR dpkg-buildpackage " and " dpkg-genchanges .
  126. .TP
  127. .BR -si ", " -sa ", " -sd
  128. These options control whether the original source archive is included
  129. in the upload generated by
  130. .BR dpkg-buildpackage " and " dpkg-genchanges
  131. if any source is being generated (ie,
  132. .BR -b " or " -B
  133. haven't been used).
  134. By default, or if
  135. .B -si
  136. is specified, the original source will be included if the version
  137. number ends in
  138. .BR -0 " or " -1 ,
  139. ie if the Debian revision part of the version number is
  140. .BR 0 " or " 1 .
  141. .B -sa
  142. forces the inclusion of the original source;
  143. .B -sd
  144. forces its exclusion and includes only the diff.
  145. .TP
  146. .BI -V name = value
  147. Set an output substitution variable.
  148. This option is understood by
  149. .BR dpkg-source ", " dpkg-gencontrol " and " dpkg-genchanges .
  150. See below for a discussion of output substitution.
  151. .TP
  152. .BI -T substvarsfile
  153. Read (or, for
  154. .BR dpkg-shlibdeps ,
  155. write) substitution variables in
  156. .IR substvarsfile ;
  157. the default is
  158. .BR debian/substvars .
  159. This option is understood by
  160. .BR dpkg-source ", " dpkg-gencontrol ", " dpkg-shlibdeps " and " dpkg-genchanges .
  161. .TP
  162. .BI -D field = value
  163. Override or add an output control file field.
  164. This option is understood by
  165. .BR dpkg-source ", " dpkg-gencontrol " and " dpkg-genchanges .
  166. .TP
  167. .BI -U field
  168. Remove an output control file field.
  169. This option is understood by
  170. .BR dpkg-source ", " dpkg-gencontrol " and " dpkg-genchanges .
  171. .TP
  172. .BR -b | -B
  173. For
  174. .BR dpkg-genchanges " and " dpkg-buildpackage
  175. this specifies that a binary-only build is taking place.
  176. .B -b
  177. indicates that no source files are to be built and/or distributed, and
  178. .B -B
  179. that no architecture-independent binary package files are to be
  180. distributed either. The distinction between
  181. .BR -b " and " -B
  182. is only used by
  183. .BR dpkg-buildpackage ;
  184. .B dpkg-genchanges
  185. just produces a
  186. .B .changes
  187. file for whatever files were produced by the
  188. .B binary-*
  189. target(s) of the package being built.
  190. .B -b
  191. tells
  192. .B dpkg-source
  193. to build a source package (rather than to extract one) - see below.
  194. .TP
  195. .BI -c controlfile
  196. Specifies the main source control file to read information from. The
  197. default is
  198. .BR debian/control .
  199. This option is understood by
  200. .BR dpkg-source ", " dpkg-gencontrol " and " dpkg-genchanges .
  201. .TP
  202. .BI -l changelogfile
  203. Specifies the change log file to read information from. The
  204. default is
  205. .BR debian/changelog .
  206. This option is understood by
  207. .BR dpkg-source ", " dpkg-gencontrol " and " dpkg-genchanges .
  208. .TP
  209. .BI -f fileslistfile
  210. Read or write the list of files to be uploaded here, rather than using
  211. .BR debian/files .
  212. This option is understood by
  213. .BR dpkg-gencontrol ", " dpkg-genchanges " and " dpkg-distaddfile .
  214. .TP
  215. .BI -F changelogformat
  216. Specifies the format of the changelog. By default the format is read
  217. from a special line near the bottom of the changelog (see the
  218. Debian packaging manual) or failing that defaults to
  219. .BR debian ,
  220. the standard format described in the
  221. .IR "Debian packaging manual" .
  222. This option is understood by
  223. .BR dpkg-source ", " dpkg-gencontrol " and " dpkg-genchanges .
  224. .SH DPKG-SOURCE OPTIONS
  225. When the common options
  226. .BR -c " and " -l
  227. are given with relative pathnames these are interpreted starting at
  228. the source tree's top level directory.
  229. .TP
  230. .B -x
  231. Extract a source package. One non-option argument should be supplied,
  232. the name of the Debian source control file
  233. .RB ( .dsc ).
  234. No options are useful with
  235. .BR "dpkg-source -x" .
  236. .B dpkg-source
  237. will read the names of the other file(s) making up the source package
  238. from the control file; they are assumed to be in the same directory as
  239. the
  240. .BR .dsc .
  241. The files in the extracted package will have their permissions and
  242. ownerships set to those which would have been expected if the files
  243. and directories had simply been created - directories and executable
  244. files will be 0777 and plain files will be 0666, both modified by the
  245. extractors' umask; if the parent directory is setgid then the
  246. extracted directories will be too, and all the files and directories
  247. will inherit its group ownership.
  248. .TP
  249. .B -b
  250. Build: pack up a source tree. One or two non-option arguments should
  251. be supplied. The first is taken as the name of the directory
  252. containing the unpacked source tree. If a second argument is supplied
  253. it should be the name of the original source directory or tarfile or
  254. the empty string if the package is a Debian-specific one and so has no
  255. Debianisation diffs. If no second argument is supplied then
  256. .B dpkg-source
  257. will look for the original source tarfile
  258. .IB package _ upstream-version .orig.tar.gz
  259. or the original source directory
  260. .IB directory .orig
  261. or the empty string (no original source, and so no diff) depending on
  262. the arguments.
  263. .TP
  264. .B -i[<regexp>]
  265. You may specify a perl regular expression to match files you want
  266. filtered out of the list of files for the diff. (This list is
  267. generated by a find command.) \fB-i\fR by itself enables the option,
  268. with a default that will filter out CVS, RCS and libtool .deps
  269. subdirectories, and all files within them, as well as ~ suffixed
  270. backup files and DEAD_JOE's.
  271. This is very helpful in cutting out extraneous files that get included
  272. in the .diff.gz, (eg: "debian/BUGS_TODO/*" or "debian/RCS/*,v"). For
  273. instance, if you maintain a package that you track via remote CVS,
  274. where you don't have access permissions for commiting the debian
  275. control files and making tags for \fIcvs-buildpackage(1)\fR, it is
  276. necessary to perform an extra checkout/update into a directory you
  277. keep pristine, to generate the .orig.tar.gz from. That directory will
  278. have CVS/Entries files in it that will contain timestamps that differ
  279. from the ones in your working directory, thus causing them to be
  280. unnecessarily included in every .diff.gz, unless you use the \fB-i\fR
  281. switch.
  282. .TP
  283. .BR -sa , -sp , -su , -sk , -sA , -sP , -sU , -sK , -ss " with " -b
  284. If
  285. .BR -sk " or " -sp
  286. is specified
  287. .B dpkg-source
  288. expects the original source as a tarfile, by default
  289. .IB package _ upstream-version .orig.tar.gz\fR.
  290. It will leave this original source in place as a tarfile, or copy it
  291. to the current directory if it isn't already there
  292. If
  293. .B -sp
  294. is used rather than
  295. .B -sk
  296. it will remove it again afterwards.
  297. If
  298. .BR -su " or " -sr
  299. is specified the original source is expected as a directory, by
  300. default
  301. .IB package - upstream-version .orig
  302. and
  303. .B dpkg-source
  304. will create a new original source archive from it. If
  305. .B -sr
  306. is used
  307. .B dpkg-source will remove that directory after it has been used.
  308. If
  309. .B -ss
  310. is specified
  311. .B dpkg-source
  312. will expect that the original source is available both as a directory
  313. and as a tarfile. If will use the directory to create the diff, but
  314. the tarfile to create the
  315. .BR .dsc .
  316. This option must be used with care - if the directory and tarfile do
  317. not match a bad source archive will be generated.
  318. If
  319. .B -sn
  320. is specified
  321. .B dpkg-source
  322. will not look for any original source, and will not generate a diff.
  323. The second argument, if supplied, must be the empty string. This is
  324. used for Debian-specific packages which do not have a separate
  325. upstream source and therefore have no debianisation diffs.
  326. If
  327. .BR -sa " or " -sA
  328. is specified
  329. .B dpkg-source
  330. will look for the original source archive as a tarfile or as a
  331. directory - the second argument, if any, may be either, or the empty
  332. string (this is equivalent to using
  333. .BR -sn ).
  334. If a tarfile is found it will unpack it to create the diff and remove
  335. it afterwards (this is equivalent to
  336. .BR -sp );
  337. if a directory is found it will pack it to create the original source
  338. and remove it afterwards (this is equivalent to
  339. .BR -sr );
  340. if neither is found it will assume that the package has no
  341. debianisation diffs, only a straightforward source archive (this is
  342. equivalent to
  343. .BR -sn ).
  344. If both are found then dpkg-source will ignore the directory,
  345. overwriting it, if
  346. .B -sA
  347. was specified (this is equivalent to
  348. .BR -sP )
  349. or raise an error if
  350. .B -sa
  351. was specified.
  352. .B -sA
  353. is the default.
  354. .BR -sa ", " -sp ", " -sk ", " -su " and " -sr
  355. will not overwrite existing tarfiles or directories. If this is
  356. desired then
  357. .BR -sA ", " -sP ", " -sK ", " -su " and " -sR
  358. should be used instead.
  359. .TP
  360. .BR -sp , -su , -sn " with " -x
  361. In all cases any existing original source tree will be removed.
  362. If
  363. .B -sp
  364. is used when extracting then the original source (if any) will be left
  365. as a tarfile. If it is not already located in the current directory
  366. or if an existing but different file is there it will be copied there.
  367. This is the default.
  368. .B -su
  369. unpacks the original source tree.
  370. .B -sn
  371. ensures that the original source is neither copied to the current
  372. directory nor unpacked. Any original source tree that was in the
  373. current directory is still removed.
  374. .SH DPKG-GENCONTROL OPTIONS
  375. .B dpkg-gencontrol
  376. does not take any non-option arguments.
  377. .TP
  378. .BI -p package
  379. Generate information for the binary package
  380. .IR package .
  381. If the source control file lists only one binary package then this
  382. option may be omitted; otherwise it is essential to select which
  383. binary package's information to generate.
  384. .TP
  385. .BR -is ", " -ip ", " -isp
  386. Include the
  387. .BR Section " and " Priority
  388. fields for this package from the main source control file in the
  389. binary package control file being generated. Usually this information
  390. is not included here, but only in the
  391. .B .changes
  392. file.
  393. .B -isp
  394. includes both fields,
  395. .BR -is " only the " Section " and " -ip " only the " Priority .
  396. .TP
  397. .BI -P packagebuilddir
  398. Tells
  399. .B dpkg-source
  400. that the package is being built in
  401. .I packagebuilddir
  402. instead of
  403. .BR debian/tmp .
  404. This value is used to find the default value of the
  405. .B Installed-Size
  406. substitution variable and control file field (using
  407. .BR du ),
  408. and for the default location of the output file.
  409. .TP
  410. .B -O
  411. Causes the control file to be printed to standard output, rather than
  412. to
  413. .B debian/tmp/DEBIAN/control
  414. (or
  415. .IB packagebuilddir /DEBIAN/control
  416. if
  417. .B -P
  418. was used).
  419. .SH DPKG-SHLIBDEPS OPTIONS
  420. .B dpkg-shlibdeps
  421. interprets non-option arguments as executable names, just as if they'd
  422. been supplied as
  423. .BI -e executable\fR.
  424. .TP
  425. .BI -e executable
  426. Include dependencies appropriate for the shared libraries required by
  427. .IR executable .
  428. .TP
  429. .BI -d dependencyfield
  430. Add dependencies to be added to the control file dependency field
  431. .IR dependencyfield .
  432. (The dependencies for this field are placed in the variable
  433. .BI shlibs: dependencyfield\fR.)
  434. The
  435. .BI -d dependencyfield
  436. option takes effect for all executables after the option, until the
  437. next
  438. .BI -d dependencyfield\fR.
  439. The default
  440. .I dependencyfield
  441. is
  442. .BR Depends .
  443. If the same dependency entry (or set of alternatives) appears in more
  444. than one of the recognised dependency field names
  445. .BR Pre-Depends ", " Depends ", " Recommends ", " Enhances " or " Suggests
  446. then
  447. .B dpkg-shlibdeps
  448. will automatically remove the dependency from all fields except the
  449. one representing the most important dependencies.
  450. .TP
  451. .BI -p varnameprefix
  452. Causes substitution variables to start with
  453. .IB varnameprefix :
  454. instead of
  455. .BR shlib: .
  456. Likewise, any existing substitution variables starting with
  457. .IB varnameprefix :
  458. (rather than
  459. .BR shlib: )
  460. are removed from the the substitution variables file.
  461. .TP
  462. .BI -L localshlibsfile
  463. Causes
  464. .B dpkg-shlibs
  465. to read overriding shared library dependency information from
  466. .I localshlibsfile
  467. instead of
  468. .BR debian/shlibs.local .
  469. .TP
  470. .B -O
  471. Causes the substitution variable settings to be printed to standard
  472. output, rather than being added to the substitution variables file
  473. .RB ( debian/substvars
  474. by default).
  475. .SH DPKG-GENCHANGES OPTIONS
  476. .B dpkg-genchanges
  477. does not take any non-option arguments.
  478. .TP
  479. .BI -u uploadfilesdir
  480. Look for the files to be uploaded in
  481. .I uploadfilesdir
  482. rather than
  483. .B ..
  484. .RB ( dpkg-genchanges
  485. needs to find these files so that it can include their sizes and
  486. checksums in the
  487. .B .changes
  488. file).
  489. .TP
  490. .B -q
  491. Usually
  492. .B dpkg-genchanges
  493. will produce informative messages on standard error, for example about
  494. how many of the package's source files are being uploaded.
  495. .B -q
  496. suppresses these messages.
  497. .SH DPKG-BUILDPACKAGE OPTIONS
  498. .B dpkg-buildpackage
  499. does not take any non-option arguments.
  500. .TP
  501. .BI -r gain-root-command
  502. When
  503. .B dpkg-buildpackage
  504. needs to execute part of the build process as root, it prefixes the
  505. command it executes with
  506. .I gain-root-command
  507. if one has been specified.
  508. .I gain-root-command
  509. should be the name of a program on the
  510. .B PATH
  511. and will get as arguments the name of the real command to run and the
  512. arguments it should take.
  513. .I gain-root-command
  514. should not contain spaces or any other shell metacharacters.
  515. .\" what happens, if it contains spaces? (hs)
  516. .I gain-root-command
  517. might typically be
  518. .BR sudo ", " super " or " really .
  519. .B su
  520. is not suitable, since it requires a
  521. .B -c
  522. option to run a command and even then it can only invoke the user's
  523. shell with
  524. .B -c
  525. instead of passing arguments individually to the command to be run.
  526. .TP
  527. .BI -p sign-command
  528. When
  529. .B dpkg-buildpackage
  530. needs to execute GPG or PGP to sign a source control
  531. .RB ( .dsc )
  532. file or a
  533. .B .changes
  534. file it will run
  535. .I sign-command
  536. (searching the
  537. .B PATH
  538. if necessary) instead of
  539. .BR pgp .
  540. .I sign-command
  541. will get all the arguments that
  542. .B pgp
  543. would have gotten. If
  544. .I sign-command
  545. takes its arguments in GPG rather than PGP style, you should give
  546. the
  547. .B -sgpg
  548. option.
  549. .I sign-command
  550. should not contain spaces or any other shell metacharacters.
  551. .TP
  552. .B -tc
  553. Clean the source tree (using
  554. .I gain-root-command
  555. .BR "debian/rules clean" )
  556. after the package has been built.
  557. .TP
  558. .BR -us ", " -uc
  559. Do not sign the source package or the changelog, respectively.
  560. .TP
  561. .BI -a architecture
  562. Specify the Debian architecture we build for. The architecture of the
  563. machine we build on is determined automatically, and is also the default
  564. for the host machine.
  565. .TP
  566. .B -i[<regexp>]
  567. Passed unchanged to
  568. .B dpkg-source
  569. .TP
  570. .SH DPKG-DISTADDFILE ARGUMENTS
  571. .B dpkg-distaddfile
  572. does not take any non-common options. It takes three non-option
  573. arguments, the filename and the section and priority for the
  574. .B .changes
  575. file.
  576. The filename should be specified relative to the directory where
  577. .B dpkg-genchanges
  578. will expect to find the files, usually
  579. .BR .. ,
  580. rather than being a pathname relative to the current directory when
  581. .B dpkg-distaddfile
  582. is run.
  583. .SH DPKG-PARSECHANGELOG ARGUMENTS
  584. .B dpkg-parsechangelog
  585. does not take any non-common options or non-option arguments.
  586. .SH VARIABLE SUBSTITUTION
  587. Before
  588. .BR dpkg-source ", " dpkg-gencontrol " and " dpkg-genchanges
  589. write their control information (to the source control file
  590. .B .dsc
  591. for
  592. .B dpkg-source
  593. and to standard output for
  594. .BR dpkg-gencontrol " and " dpkg-genchanges )
  595. they perform some variable substitutions on the output file.
  596. A variable substitution has the form
  597. .BI ${ variable-name }\fR.
  598. Variable names consist of alphanumerics, hyphens and colons and start
  599. with an alphanumeric. Variable substitutions are performed repeatedly
  600. until none are left; the full text of the field after the substitution
  601. is rescanned to look for more substitutions.
  602. After all the substitutions have been done each occurence of the
  603. string
  604. .B ${}
  605. (which is not a legal substitution) is replaced with a
  606. .B $
  607. sign.
  608. Variables can be set using the
  609. .B -V
  610. common option. They can be also specified in the file
  611. .B debian/substvars
  612. (or whatever other file is specified using the
  613. .B -T
  614. option). This file consists of lines of the form
  615. .IB name = value\fR.
  616. Trailing whitespace on each line, blank lines, and
  617. lines starting with a
  618. .B #
  619. symbol (comments) are ignored.
  620. Additionally, the following standard variables are available:
  621. .TP
  622. .BI Arch
  623. The current build architecture (from
  624. .BR "dpkg \-\-print-architecture" ).
  625. .TP
  626. .B Source-Version
  627. The source package version (from the changelog file).
  628. .TP
  629. .B Installed-Size
  630. The total size of the package's installed files. This value is copied
  631. into the corresponding control file field; setting it will modify the
  632. value of that field. If this variable isn't set
  633. .B dpkg-gencontrol
  634. will use
  635. .B du -k debian/tmp
  636. to find the default value.
  637. .TP
  638. .B Extra-Size
  639. Additional disk space used when the package is installed. If this
  640. variable is set its value is added to that of the
  641. .B Installed-Size
  642. variable (whether set explicitly or using the default value) before it
  643. is copied into the
  644. .B Installed-Size
  645. control file field.
  646. .TP
  647. .BI F: fieldname
  648. The value of the output field
  649. .IR fieldname
  650. (which must be given in the canonical capitalisation). Setting these
  651. variables has no effect other than on places where they are expanded
  652. explicitly.
  653. .TP
  654. .B Format
  655. The
  656. .B .changes
  657. file format version generated by this version of the source packaging
  658. scripts. If you set this variable the contents of the
  659. .B Format
  660. field in the
  661. .B .changes
  662. file will change too.
  663. .TP
  664. .BR Newline ", " Space ", " Tab
  665. These variables each hold the corresponding character.
  666. .TP
  667. .BI shlibs: dependencyfield
  668. Variable settings with names of this form are generated by
  669. .B dpkg-shlibdeps
  670. - see above.
  671. .LP
  672. If a variable is referred to but not defined it generates a warning
  673. and an empty value is assumed.
  674. .SH FILES
  675. .TP
  676. .B debian/control
  677. The main source control information file, giving version-independent
  678. information about the source package and the binary packages it can
  679. produce.
  680. .TP
  681. .B debian/changelog
  682. The changelog file, used to obtain version-dependent information about
  683. the source package, such as the urgency and distribution of an upload,
  684. the changes made since a particular release, and the source version
  685. number itself.
  686. .TP
  687. .B debian/files
  688. The list of generated files which are part of the upload being
  689. prepared.
  690. .B dpkg-gencontrol
  691. adds the presumed filenames of binary packages whose control files it
  692. generates here;
  693. .B dpkg-distaddfile
  694. can be used to add additional files.
  695. .B dpkg-genchanges
  696. reads the data here when producing a
  697. .B .changes
  698. file.
  699. .TP
  700. .B debian/substvars
  701. List of substitution variables and values.
  702. .TP
  703. .B debian/shlibs.local
  704. Package-local overriding shared library dependency information.
  705. .TP
  706. .B /etc/dpkg/shlibs.override
  707. Per-system overriding shared library dependency information.
  708. .TP
  709. .B /etc/dpkg/shlibs.default
  710. Per-system default shared library dependency information.
  711. .SH BUGS
  712. The point at which field overriding occurs compared to certain
  713. standard output field settings is rather confused.
  714. The binary package entries in the
  715. .B debian/files
  716. file will be passed through variable substitution twice. This should
  717. not matter, since
  718. .BR $ ", " { " and " }
  719. are not legal in package names or version numbers.
  720. It should be possible to specify spaces and shell metacharacters in
  721. and initial arguments for
  722. .IR gain-root-command " and " sign-command .
